Honor God in the Ordinary Moments

Honor God in the Ordinary Moments

Who are you really?

If you stop and take an honest inventory of your character, what would you find? How do you handle the seemingly “inconsequential” activities of life?

Years ago, God placed it on my heart to excel in the ordinary moments—because that’s where life truly happens. Imagine if you were a “fun mom” or an intentional mom only on holidays and vacations. Maybe for one whole week in the summer, you put away your phone and played intentionally with your kids. I’m sure you’d create many wonderful memories. But what if the rest of the year, you were disconnected? What kind of mom would you be then?

If we only show up to church on Easter and Christmas, and pray when we need something, can we truly call ourselves followers of Christ?

I think you know where I’m going.

Who we are isn’t revealed in the highlight reels of our lives. It’s the everyday you—how you handle the ordinary—that reveals your true character.

So how can we honor God in the most ordinary moments of life?

Let’s begin with these three verses:

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:31
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” — Colossians 3:23
“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” — Colossians 3:17

Moms, whether we’re brushing tiny teeth, cleaning up after dinner, making a bed, or changing a diaper, no task is too small or inconsequential. We are called to do everything to glorify God.

We do it with love (John 13:35).
We do it with excellence (1 Peter 2:12).
We do it with a right spirit (Psalm 51:10).
We do it with gratitude (Colossians 3:17).

Others should see God in and through us. We should stand out and shine in a dark world. If not us, then who? It starts with our families—our first ministry.

I know it’s easier said than done. But we have God on our team. Remember: it’s His Spirit in us that causes us to “will and act according to His purpose.” (Philippians 2:13)

We can do it—with Him.
